How to Use Tympanic Thermometer

Tympanic Thermometer - Laser ThermometerA lot of people out there don't know how to use tympanic thermometers. This is a pretty important skill to learn, because most children are the most comfortable having their temperature checked with tympanic thermometers.

The main reason is that they're very quick. A good model such as the Braun Tympanic Thermometer or Genius Tympanic Thermometer works very quickly and painlessly. They use infrared technology to get the temperature of the inner ear. Specifically, the part of the inner ear is the tympanic membrane, or "ear drum".

One thing to note is that too much ear wax will make your measurements less accurate. You can gently remove the wax, but be careful not to use any sharp objects or put any pressure on the ears.

That said, here's the step by step instructions on how to use tympanic thermometers:

  • Take the thermometer out of its holder. Be sure to keep it to the side so you can store the thermometer in it again.
  • Slide a new, throw-away cover over the thermometer's tip. This is to keep the actual tip clean for sanitation purposes.
  • If the patient is a child, hold their head still and ask them not to move it. If it is an adult, tell them not to move their head around.
  • Pull the child's ear back to help open up the canal. If it is an adult, pull the ear up, then back.
  • Gently put the covered tip of the tympanic thermometer into the ear opening. Don't force it or push hard at all. You do not want the tip of the thermometer to touch the ear drum.
  • Turn on the thermometer. There is normally a simple button to do this.
  • Hold the instrument in place until it beeps.
  • Remove the thermometer from the patient's ear.
  • Look at the screen of the thermometer to see the ear's temperature. If it is higher than 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit, it is above average.
  • Write down the temperature and time you took it. If you speak to a doctor later, they will want to know this.
  • Remove the throw-away cover, toss it in the garbage, and store the thermometer back in its case.

That's pretty much it. If you have young children or will soon, consider getting your own thermometer to take care of your kids when they get sick. Some of the most popular ones are Welch Allyn and First Temp, along with Braun and Genius.

Also, you can usually save money by shopping online. If you use a website such as Amazon, you can often get free shipping if you spend at least $25 on your order, whether its just a thermometer or you get some books or other items along with it.

The reviews are very helpful too. Because some tympanic thermometers might be bigger and less comfortable for children, you may want to check into the different brands and reviews before you make a decision.
